Travel boost: Fiji Airways launches flights from Nadi to Cairns, Queensland

Fiji Airways has launched another Australian route, with services between Cairns and Nadi, Fiji, launching on 10 April 2025.

The thrice-weekly flight will operate on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays and will be operated by state-of-the-art Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft.

This is the first time Australians from northern Queensland have been able to fly direct to Fiji, with the flight taking approximately four hours and 30 minutes.

The new route from Cairns to Nadi will add 53,000 seats per annum to the market and expand Fiji Airways’ global network, providing Australians and tourists with easy access to the Northern Hemisphere.

The new route aligns with Fiji Airways' Nadi-Dallas Fort Worth schedule and operates on the same day, allowing passengers to fly from Cairns to Dallas and vice versa via Nadi for a seamless and efficient transfer.

From there, travelers can travel to other destinations in the United States and beyond.

Fiji Airways managing director and chief executive André Viljoen said the new route marks the sixth direct flight from Australia to Fiji, creating new opportunities for travel.

“Our new service to Cairns is another step in the expansion of our network, providing our customers with more travel options and enhanced connectivity,” he said.

“Northern Australia holds a special appeal for many of our visitors and we're proud to be able to bring them closer to it. This route also provides easy connections from Cairns to Dallas via Nadi, allowing travelers to travel more easily than ever before Visit North America.”

Queensland Tourism Minister Andrew Powell said the new flights would provide a major boost to tourism operators in Far North Queensland.

“When these new flights begin direct from Fiji, more visitors from the South Pacific and the United States will experience the wonders of tropical North Queensland,” he said.

“They will carry up to 26,593 inbound passengers annually, generate more than $12 million in annual overnight visitor spending and create 130 direct and indirect peak jobs.

“These flights will provide another route into Cairns for Fijian students and their families, as well as another freight route for exports such as fresh produce and seafood.

“The Queensland Government is proud to support these new services as we develop our 20-year tourism plan to showcase Queensland’s natural beauty to the world, including our coral reefs, rainforests, beaches and outback.”

The new Cairns route will help strengthen tourism, trade and cultural exchanges between the two countries, strengthening Fiji Airways’ role in connecting the South Pacific to the world.

Passengers will enjoy Fiji Airways' award-winning service and renowned hospitality aboard the state-of-the-art Boeing 737 MAX aircraft.

Economy Class passengers can enjoy free full-flight text WiFi on the new service, while Business Class passengers can use free full-flight browsing Wi-Fi to stay connected while traveling.
