Nestled in the foothills of the Santa Monica Mountains just outside of Los Angeles, the Four Seasons Hotel at Westlake Village is not only a luxurious resort, but it's also a haven for wellness enthusiasts like me. From the moment I arrived, I knew this retreat would be a transformative experience.

With mountain views and close proximity to Malibu's beaches, the hotel blends tranquility with natural beauty. Here, you can escape the hustle and bustle of the city yet be within easy reach of all Southern California has to offer.

The Four Seasons brand is synonymous with luxury, comfort and first-class service, and my experience at Westlake Village certainly lived up to those expectations. Our retreat package includes a spacious Deluxe King Room with stunning waterfall views, setting the stage for a truly relaxing stay.

The hotel itself is an amenity haven, with three swimming pools, a 41,000-square-foot Asian-inspired spa (easily the largest spa in the Four Seasons collection), and a garden filled with fresh vegetables and herbs.

There are plenty of dining options on site to suit every taste – whether you're a sushi lover or you're focused on healthy eating.

One retreat guest who lives nearby mentioned that she often comes here just to enjoy a meal at Stir Coffee Bar. After trying their gluten-free blueberry muffins, I totally understand why.

What's included

The core of my stay was Health and Wellbeing Centerknown for its holistic approach to health. From personalized nutrition consultations to fitness workshops, every aspect of the retreat is designed to rejuvenate mind, body, and spirit.

The Healthy Kitchen provides meals with fresh vegetables and fruits – we even helped prepare a hearty feast on the first night of the retreat. I was initially skeptical about the cooking at the retreat, but I do feel that this hands-on experience gave us the skills to maintain healthy eating habits long after we returned home.

The 4-day itinerary is tailored to each person's specific goals. I chose the Peak Performance focus, while the other options were Sustainable Weight Management and Spa & Beauty.

Here is an overview of some of the major electives (all of which are included in my course package):

  • Nutritional consultation: The Center for Health and Wellbeing works with registered dietitians who bring expertise and a passion for healthy eating. In addition to the group classes on the first day of the retreat, I received a customized nutrition plan that addressed my specific medical issues and lifestyle needs. I brought copies of my most recent blood work for the nutritionist to review to make sure her guidance took these things into account.
  • Fitness consultation and body composition assessment: I had a personalized consultation with an exercise physiologist. Together we set fitness goals and design a tailored program that includes cardio, strength and flexibility training.
  • Fascia Stretch Therapy: The therapy is designed to improve circulation, relieve muscle fatigue and correct postural imbalances, making it an excellent aid for recovery from physical activity. This is one of my favorite retreats. I was able to resolve some of the kinks in my back and neck that had been bothering me for months.
  • Cardiorespiratory fitness assessment (VO2max): Known as the gold standard for cardiorespiratory fitness assessment, the VO2max test measures the amount of oxygen your body consumes during exercise. By analyzing this data along with your heart rate, it can accurately calculate your calorie burn at different training intensities. I also received personalized guidance on my target heart rate and how long to maintain it during my workout to ensure optimal heart health.
  • Hiking guide: We went on two hikes with experienced guides who took us to the amazing trails of the Santa Monica Mountains where we also enjoyed panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean.

  • Spa treatments: Our retreat included a one-hour massage and we had full access to the spa facilities throughout our stay.

What really sets this resort apart is the personalized attention. Whether it was a one-on-one training session with a fitness expert or a tailor-made yoga session, each experience was carefully designed to meet my specific needs. The staff's expertise and dedication to wellness was evident in every interaction, ensuring I felt supported throughout my journey.

I am grateful for the opportunity to prioritize my health and well-being in such a luxurious setting. This retreat not only rejuvenated my body but also refreshed my mind, allowing me to continue my health journey long after I return home.
