Noise reduction is better than ever
The first-generation AirPods Pro delivered an impressive sound experience in an extremely portable package, and the new models take it to the next level.
As a long-term user Apple's professional-grade earbudsI have become accustomed to the sound experience they provide, and I imagine that the next generation of headphones will be iteratively updated in terms of audio quality.

But when I first put them on, I was particularly impressed by the active noise-cancelling upgrades.
The new AirPods Pro are powered by next-generation Apple H2 silicon, which can handle advanced algorithms previously unachievable on the first-generation model. Combined with new, more powerful audio drivers (which physically generate sound), the result is nearly twice the active noise cancellation of the previous generation.

Of course, nothing tests Apple's claims better than cruising at 30,000 feet in a plane.
After five flights AirPods Proactive noise cancellation is truly impressive. I flew with both the first and second generation Pros and used them interchangeably throughout the flight to feel the upgrade in sound quality.

The second-gen buds have fewer announcements and chatty passengers than the older models, which makes me uneasy. The sound quality is also significantly better.
Long battery life
During my trip, I tried to test the battery life improvements of Apple's second-generation AirPods Pro.
Nothing impressed me more than my two transcontinental flights. With the first-generation headphones, I always had to charge my AirPods about three-quarters of the way through the flight.

But with the new AirPods Pro, the music kept playing until just after we landed. When I flew from New York to Seattle, I put on my AirPods Pro as I boarded the plane to help me focus on some last-minute work.
I then listened to podcasts and played music for the rest of the flight. When I arrived in Seattle, the AirPods Pro had about 10% battery left.
With just over six hours to go from boarding to flight, my experience with the second-generation AirPods Pro (slightly) exceeded Apple's promised six hours of listening time for the new Pros, an increase over the first-generation AirPods Pro one third. Legacy model.

The extra 90 minutes of listening time made a big difference on my Transcon flight, and it made a noticeable difference on my longer trips as well. (You'll also get an extra hour of call time with your new professional.)
While you can always charge the AirPods Pro when they're empty (5 minutes of charging in the case gives about an hour of listening time), I enjoyed being able to continue listening during the flight without interrupting my music or podcasts.

Small speakers make a big difference
The new AirPods Pro are also a great upgrade for travelers who tend to lose things.
For one, you can always keep them attached to your bag thanks to the new lanyard loop on the charging case.

If you lose your second-generation AirPods Pro, the new U1 chip in the charging case can help you find them accurately inside the charging case. find my networkwhich lets you know exactly where they are.
New speakers in the charging case play sounds when you're close, helping you quickly find your AirPods, whether they're on the couch or between airplane seats.

Personally, I'm someone who keeps my AirPods in my pocket, but now I have the peace of mind that if they fall somewhere during my travels, it won't take long to be reunited with my headphones.
Volume at your fingertips
Controlling your sound experience on the go just got even easier with 2nd generation AirPods Pro.
Apple redesigned the touch area on each AirPod stem to give users more flexibility when playing music or making calls.

With the addition of a new capacitive sensing layer, you can now adjust the volume by swiping up and down on the stem. Press the handle to control audio, while holding it down switches between noise-canceling and transparency modes. (You can always customize these options from the settings menu on the paired iOS device.)
Personally, the new volume slider feature comes in handy during my travels, when flight attendants pass by my seat and when making important announcements.

When this happened, I quickly lowered the volume on my AirPods directly, without using my phone or connected Apple Watch. I could then communicate with the crew and listen to the entire broadcast without interruption. (Alternatively, I could switch to transparency mode – more on that below.)
Of course, reaching for your phone or just pausing audio isn't necessarily an inconvenience, but the new volume slider is a nice feature.
Transparency mode significantly upgraded
Sometimes you want to be aware of your surroundings while listening to audio through headphones. Maybe you want to hear what's going on around you while visiting a new city or waiting to board your flight.
In these cases, be sure to turn on Transparency Mode on AirPods Pro. This feature essentially plays what's going on around you without stopping your music.

Moreover, the new AirPods Pro take the transparency mode experience to the next level by introducing adaptive transparency.
When you pass a noisy building or a fire alarm goes off, the new AirPods Pro dynamically adjust those noises to healthier decibels.

You can customize many aspects of this feature in the accessibility settings on your iOS device, but by default, adaptive transparency will kick in for any audio above 85 decibels. This will definitely help you avoid hearing harmful sounds that can ultimately lead to hearing loss.
bottom line
While some travelers still love over-ear headphones, the new AirPods Pro provide a compelling reason to ditch those bulky headphones while traveling.
The second-generation AirPods Pro can easily fit into a pocket or purse, provide a better sound experience, and are especially suitable for travelers. They are also better than Entry-level AirPodsit doesn’t offer active noise cancellation, a must-have feature for those who want to zone out while traveling.
At the usual price of $249, the new Pros are $70 more expensive than the “regular” third-generation AirPods — and that's not including any promotions or limited-time sales. It’s a worthwhile splurge, especially if you plan on traveling with your headphones.

Improved noise cancellation and battery enhancements are the focus of the travel-focused upgrades on the Pros, but other improvements like precise positioning, redesigned controls, and a new adaptive transparency mode make these Apple's most travel-friendly earbuds yet .
It's worth noting that AirPods (and Bluetooth headphones in general) are still a problem for those trying to use the headphones with existing seatback displays on a plane. although Bluetooth support is slowly being rolled out on the latest jetsyou still need to pack a dongle (air flight is our advice to most others.

For those upgrading from the first-generation model, the new Pro does offer some valuable upgrades. While an immediate upgrade may not be necessary, it certainly doesn't hurt to put next-gen headphones on your holiday wish list.
